Northumberland Labour Council Issues CUPW Statement

December 20, 2024

On December 13, The Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) have intervened in negotiations between Canada Post and the union (CUPW) representing the postal workers. CIRB and Federal Liberal Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon have legislated all CUPW members back to work.

The Liberal Government and Canada Post should be ashamed of themselves for violating the workers’ Charter of Rights. Their actions further exploited the workers, especially when CUPW members are fighting for a living wage, safer working conditions and the ability to retire with dignity.

Northumberland Labour Council President Dan Tobin says, “Enough is Enough!” and “The message should be loud and clear that any politician across Canada will not get away with turning a blind eye to workers’ rights.”

Northumberland Labour Council would like to send out admiration and respect to all postal workers across the Country as they have made vast sacrifices, while holding strong on the picket lines as they fight for good jobs, fair wages, and a strong, public, postal system.

We need to keep up the pressure on Canada Post to get a fair deal done. Northumberland Labour Council fully supports our Brothers and Sisters at CUPW as they deal with back-to-work legislation.
